Elbow dysplasia is an umbrella term for several developmental abnormalities of the elbow joint that result in pain, lameness, and progressive [arthritis](https://seniorpet.org/knowledge/golden-retriever-arthritis-pain-management "Arthritis Management in Senior Pets"). It's one of the most common causes of forelimb lameness in large-breed dogs, and Golden Retrievers are among the most frequently affected breeds.

Components of Elbow Dysplasia
Fragmented Medial Coronoid Process (FCP/FMCP)
- Most common form in Golden Retrievers
- A piece of the ulna's coronoid process cracks or fragments
- Fragment irritates the joint, damages cartilage
- Often bilateral (both elbows affected)
Osteochondrosis Dissecans (OCD)
- Abnormal cartilage development on the humeral condyle
- Cartilage flap separates from underlying bone
- Causes pain and mechanical irritation in the joint
- Can occur alongside FCP
Ununited Anconeal Process (UAP)
- The anconeal process fails to fuse with the ulna
- Less common in Golden Retrievers than some other breeds
- Creates instability and pain in the joint
- Usually diagnosed by 5-6 months of age
Elbow Incongruity
- Mismatch in growth between radius and ulna
- Creates uneven pressure distribution in the joint
- May contribute to development of FCP or OCD
- Can be subtle and difficult to diagnose on X-rays

Genetic
- Strong hereditary component (polygenic)

Clinical Signs
In Young Dogs (5-18 months)
